Inheritance J. Michael Shannon March 1, 2005 Every British monarch is crowned sitting in the Coronation Chair. It is not very impressive. The paint is peeling, showing the marks of earlier paint. The initials of schoolboys are carved on it. But beneath it is the Stone of Scone over which Scottish kings were crowned . . . and legend says that it is the very stone on which Jacob pillowed his head that night when we fled from Esau. It is unlikely that that stone is Jacob’s stone – or that the stone pillow was ever marked or remembered or cherished. What we should cherish is the faith of Jacob who sensed God’s presence in that lonely place, and prayed there, and made a vow to God. _______________ J.
