?The Christian in an Age of Terror January 1, 2009 Martyn Lloyd-Jones Grand Rapids: Kregel Publications, 2008. Paper, 280 pages. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones was one of the exceptional preachers of his age, so a new collection of previously unpublished sermons is welcome news. The Christian in an Age of Terror, edited by Michael Eaton, includes 25 sermons Lloyd-Jones preached to his London congregation at Westminster Chapel, most during World War II. Most of these sermons were preached at a time when Lloyd-Jones was alternating the pulpit with G. Campbell Morgan-one would preach for a month in the morning and the other in the evening, then they would reverse services. Thus, four- to fiveweek series were common for them in this era, and all five of these sermon series consist of six messages or less. The sermons here demonstrate that for Lloyd-Jones, an expository message went beyond a discussion of the text itself but included an exploration of the contemporary application of the biblical text. They are powerful messages that spoke to a dangerous era and can speak to ours as well.Contemporary preachers will benefit from Lloyd-Jones’ gifted expositions and from his model of providing encouragement in a challenging time.
