A Year Of Opportunities
By Carolyn Tomlin
Focus: New Year’s
Text: Galatians 6:9 (NIV)
Object: Large Calendar
Song: “We’ll Work Till Jesus Comes”

Hello boys and girls. I’m glad to see you today. This is the season when we begin a new year and we think of resolutions — or promises we make to ourselves or others. I’m holding a calendar — an object that shows the months, weeks, and days of the coming year. During this time we often think of ways to improve our lives, such as better health habits, making new friends and other commitments.

Instead of thinking about a year, let’s break it down into smaller parts. How many months in a year? (12). How many weeks in a year? (52). How many days are in a year? (365). With all this time let us think about ways we can serve Jesus in the coming year. Do you have any ideas? (Call on several children who want to respond.)

I hear you saying we can serve Jesus in the coming year by coming to Sunday school and church, reading our Bible and inviting others to come with us. How can we treat our friends? If we want to have friends, we have to be a friend to others. This means we should be responsible, honest, caring and helpful. The Bible is our guide for serving Jesus throughout the year.

Listen as I read Galatians 6:9. “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” The Bible teaches us to serve God through serving others.

Prayer: Jesus, guide each boy and girl here today to use their time wisely throughout the coming year. Let their life be an example of good works and deeds. Amen

[Lead the children in singing one stanza of “We’ll Work Till Jesus Comes.” Children return to their seats at this time.]
